Shameka S.L. Sawyer is the cineSPEAK spotlight for May 2023

BY GABE CASTRO – The cinéSPEAK Journal publishes a monthly Philadelphia Artist Spotlight highlighting local filmmakers and moving image artists doing unique and impactful work.
S.L. Sawyer is a communications strategist turned film producer and creator. Sawyer transformed her passion and knowledge for film into opportunities for independent and burgeoning filmmakers to create content that truly represents the diverse landscape of Philadelphia. These opportunities include the 5 Shorts Project, a creative initiative that strives to make filmmaking accessible for underserved communities. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the 5 Shorts Project, making it one of the few film companies in Philadelphia owned and operated by an African American woman. The project expanded and now has a program specifically for youth creators in the city who work together to combat the gun violence epidemic in our neighborhoods called the Bout Mine, I Matter: Youth Gun Violence Deterrent Program.

While her organizing and producing skills have helped many new filmmakers start their creative journeys, Sawyer is a creator in her own right with emotional and conversational pieces that will move you. Her intimate and personal film, Sometimes I Cry in June, tells the story of her brother who she lost to gun violence in 2020. In a conversation with the Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Helen Ubiñas, she explained it as a cathartic piece, saying, “This is the conversation I wished I had with him before he was gone. It was a form of therapy, a way to feel close to him.” READ FULL ARTICLE

M. Asli Dukan is the cineSPEAK spotlight for April 2023

M. Asli Dukan is a talented media creator known for writing, producing, directing and editing award-winning and impactful films. From a young age, Dukan has always been interested in the arts, having written her first stories at only twelve years old. She grew up watching many science fiction films with her mother, inspiring her work with speculative fiction media as a tool to educate and empower.

Her work ranges in style from short films and documentaries to music videos. Dukan focuses her work in the speculative fiction space, using the genre to shape subversive, radical, and liberatory media. In her work we can find imagined futures of revolution, strength, community, and perseverance. Dukan is the Chair of the cinéSPEAK Board of Directors. She has notably worked with talents such as Octavia E. Butler, Samuel R. Delany, Nnedi Okorafor, NK Jemison, Nichelle Nichols, Wesley Snipes, Tamar-kali, 50 Cent, LL Cool J, and Ernest Dickerson.

Dukan uses genre narratives to cultivate conversations about our communities and the state of the world around us. Her 6-part web series, Resistance: the battle of philadelphia (available for streaming on the Black-owned platform Kweli TV) was completed in 2018. Filmed in West Philadelphia, the series transports us to a near-future, not unlike our present, where a community struggles against state surveillance, violence, and a powerful corporate government.  READ FULL STORY

cinéSPEAK chose SIFT for one of their Philadelphia Organization Spotlights: SIFT believes that fostering a community that supports and shares resources can create long lasting, meaningful opportunities for women artists. Learn more about SIFT and how they are promoting the work of Black and Latinx Women content creators through community building.

This collective of Black women filmmakers are creating their art and making their own opportunities. cinéSPEAK asked Nikki Harmon, Program Director of SIFTMedia 215 Collective (SIFT), about the opportunities at SIFT, its impact on women of color filmmakers, and its hope for the Philadelphia filmmaking community.

cinéSPEAK: What are some of the programs or opportunities at SIFT that folks can get involved in?

SIFT: We host technical and professional workshops, virtually and in-person, that are open to the general public. Upcoming workshops include sound recording in the field, set building, and drone cinematography.

cinéSPEAK: What is unique about your organization within the Philadelphia landscape?

SIFT: We are a professional media collective that is comprised of Black and Brown women-identified media creatives. We share resources, build community, promote professional development, and fundraise as a collective to create and amplify our individual and collaborative projects.

cinéSPEAK: What is one thing the general public might not know about SIFT?

SIFT: We commissioned a survey to gather quantitative data on the state of our membership and their peers.

The “Listen To What I Say” Report set out to examine the landscape of navigating the art and business of film & media making, affecting Women of Color (WOC). The Analysis Survey Project looked specifically at the experiences and challenges these women filmmakers face in Philadelphia and the surrounding community.

According to SIFT, “Over 40 women participated in the Survey. A three-hour long, moderator led, follow-up focus group was held in May 2022. Five participants took a deep dive into the issues of the survey, agreeing to share more of their personal and professional experiences.” You can view excerpts of the “Listen To What I Say” presentation and panel discussion on YouTube

Bettina Escauriza  Philadelphia Artist Spotlight on CineSpeak

 By Gabe Castro

The cinéSPEAK Journal publishes a monthly Philadelphia Artist Spotlight highlighting local filmmakers and moving image artists doing unique and impactful work.

Bettina Escauriza is a filmmaker, writer, artist, and actor living in Philadelphia. Originally from Asunción, Paraguay, her work is influenced by her culture and experiences dealing with Indigenous knowledge, colonization, immigration, and exile. She is a natural storyteller from a family of “frustrated mystics, spectacular liars, ill-fated thieves, and awful politicians.” Her aim as a filmmaker is to tell stories about Indigenous people and people of color that are “lush, sensual, thrilling, and complex”— she wants to tell the truth about the communities she comes from by “centering narratives of joy, defiance, and resistance in the face of oppression.”

Escauriza’s latest work, Tonight, We Eat Flowers, follows two characters: Luis, a recent immigrant and former doctor who works a soulless job selling phone hold music to corporations while saving money to get certified in Emergency Medical Services, and Jamilah, a brilliant gourmet chef who is stuck working in a cubicle hellscape and dreams of a life of sensuality, color, and flavor… READ MORE
